The Balmoral, which first opened in 1902, is located on the eastern end of Princes Street and set in a neo-Renaissance building with huge clock tower. This early 20th century hotel still retains some of its original features, including the reception’s ornate plasterwork, elegant well staircase and Palm Court tearoom and bar’s domed ceiling.

Accommodation at the hotel is made up of 168 Classic and Executive rooms all designed by Olga Polizzi, and 20 suites comprising of Junior Suite and Junior Suite Castle View. The Classic Rooms mainly have views overlooking the courtyard and are furnished with queen-sized bed. The rooms also have air conditioning and complimentary WiFi is also available. The bathrooms feature Italian marble, some with prints of Sean Connery.

The Executive Rooms offer similar features to the Junior Rooms but include an extra bed. They can also be interconnected making them the perfect solution for family stays. These rooms offer views of the courtyard or over the city.

The Junior Suites afford views over the courtyard and city. The design is open plan living as well as bedroom area with king sized bed and the suites include armchairs for additional comfort. The bathroom is also Italian marble. Junior Suite Castle View offers similar luxury though an extra bed can be included. These suites offer fabulous views of Edinburgh Castle and Princes Street Gardens.

Dining at the Balmoral is a gastronomic delight. The hotel’s restaurant, the Number One, is nestled in the basement in a luxurious setting. For breakfasts and traditional Scottish fayre try the Hadrian’s Brasserie, while the Palm Court is famed for its afternoon teas and champagne bar. For guests wanting to enjoy a light lunch the Balmoral Bar is available.

The Balmoral’s location means that Edinburgh’s tourist spot are within easy reach. It is just a short walk from the city’s main shopping areas and the National Gallery while the National Museum, Holyrood Palace and Edinburgh Castle are also close by.
